Sichuan Fine Arts Institute plays an very important role in the art field of China. Numerous graduates from there have become emerging artists, participated and facilitated the development of art all together.
The Sichuan Fine Arts Institute residency project is a new way in our education system. It’s an extended college and promotes not only the inner evolution but also the communication with outside. These youth artists who benefit from the residency have become the new blood of the art field in China. This exhibition Views on the Road brings us the artists’ newest works and their experimental ideas. It’s also a platform for all of us to hear different voices in order to encourage these emerging artists to keep going forward in their creation.
Shanghai Himalayas Museum has been practicing international residency projects for many years. This exhibition is a successful result of our cooperation with Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. We are trying our best to facilitate the communication among art schools and galleries, and provide more opportunities for emerging artists.
In the end, we’re appreciated for all the supports and the efforts made by Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and S.O Art Space during the project. We hope this exhibition would be the start of a wider range of communication and further cooperation with more art schools and other institutes.

The development of contemporary art in China relies on the talent cultivation in art schools. Since 1982, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute has recruited and cultivated numerous postgraduates and brought us so many creative and outstanding artists. They make their own efforts on art creating, communication and educations, they also devote themselves to the revolution on art system and atmosphere which play such an crucial role on art development. In order to bring more energy and process a sustainable education system, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute has also made a lot of efforts including building an art museum which harmonised Modernism and Primitivism, an open atmosphere for students and offering them more diverse tutorials.
To art schools, talent cultivation needs to be linked together with the development of our society and the evolution of arts. Therefore, art education needs to get public involved. Perhaps we need to re-define the concept of “elite art” cause art school doesn’t have to stick on a closed administration and education, it doesn’t have to maintain a prideful attitude either. Art schools have to open to the society and various information. The cooperation among art schools and other subject fields will bring more vigour to art schools and the artists within its environment. To youth artists, it’s the same. They must go to the public instead of just making progress on creating new art genres, and then they would be able to create more emotional and appealing works.
This exhibition shows the excellent works created by graduates from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and also the artists involved in the residency project. Although they are in different situations in their art career, they all have studying experience in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. These art works are created by their passion, and are also the results of the educational revolution. Not only do they need to hear the voice in the art field, they have to communicate with the society as well. I believe this exhibition will bring us some new experience and feelings, and offer a new education scheme to open a new way of re-thinking and developing. I believe these promising young artists’ works will impress you, and they are ready now to welcome the voice from the outside world.
